Hog or Pork
Suckling pig is a famous dish for wedding dinners amongst the chinese community. A 10-course dinner with suckling pig will cost at least RM550 per table in a restaurant compared to a mere RM399 one year ago.
A family friend who’s in the business of the famous suckling pig mentioned that come this June, all pork will be out-of-stock within Malaysia. For the past few months, the price of pork has increased by RM10 per piglet due to shortage and also increase in feed prices.
It seems that as the Olympic Games 2008 to be held in Beijing draws nearer, all local suppliers have hinted that supplies of pork will come to a halt or near-halt in June as they are reserved for export to China. It is also said that pork from Vietnam will also be channeled there for the Olympics season.
As the Chinese diet leans mainly to pork, it is not hard to believe this reasoning and that China will import tons of pork to cater to its visitors during this period.
From the discussion with this family friend, I found out that it takes 3 weeks from birth for a piglet to be marketed. Any piglets that are rendered too boney or small at that time will be reared until it’s matured for its meat.
So, assuming that China’s demand is as high as expected, suppliers will be reserving all produce from early-July onwards to cater to this tremendous market. If this is so, can we assume that the price of pork will rise further in July?
According to my old faithful Oxford dictionary, the definition of pork is “flesh of a pig” and the definition of hog is “castrated male pig reared for meat”.
Any takers to long on Lean Hog July contract?
